About UCLG
UCLG
UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments) is an international local government organization with membership including both individual cities and national associations of local governments.
Through information exchange and mutual cooperation of its members, as well as implementing various training programs, it aims to strengthen local governments, promote decentralization and capacity building of local governments.
In addition, by promoting directly before an international community and unifying the voices of local governments on an international level in responding to globalization and urbanization, UCLG aims to affect influence as representatives of all local governments in the sphere of the United Nations and related organizations.
Members consists of cities and local governments, as well as local government associations and related organizations that hold strong relationships with local governments. The headquarters is located in Barcelona, Spain with the Presidency held by the Mayor of Paris, France.
The structure of UCLG is split into two levels, the world level and regional level. On a regional level, there are 7 regions (Africa, Asia Pacific, Euro-Asia, Europe, Middle-East and West Asia, Latin America, and North America) and a Metropolitan section (for cities over 1 million inhabitants).
UCLG ASPAC
ASPAC (Asia Pacific Regional Section) is one of the regions of UCLG. ASPAC extends over a region of approximately 3.7 billion inhabitants, more than half of the world’s population. The Secretariat is located in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the Presidency held by the Mayor of Daegu, Korea.
Hamamatsu City and UCLG
Hamamatsu City is a local government member of UCLG and is the only city member from Japan. Through its membership of UCLG, in expanding the network of information and people crossing over national borders and participating in international exchange, it aims to cooperate with cities from around the world towards solving problems affecting Hamamatsu city as well promote local governments.
In 2003, Hamamatsu became a member of IULA, one of the former organizations of UCLG. In 2004, after the inauguration of UCLG, it currently participates as a council member of the UCLG World Council, a council member and executive member of UCLG ASPAC.
In 2008 Hamamatsu City was a candidate to host the next UCLG ASPAC Congress, and was selected as host city at the ASPAC Executive Bureau meeting in the same year.
